Funny Face Drink Mix

Pillsbury introduced Funny Face Drink Mix in 1964. It was a great kid’s choice and alternative to traditional carbonated soft drinks and fruit juices. It competed directly with Kool Aid which had been around since the 1930’s, and was the clear market leader.
What was unique about Funny Face is that it was originally promoted as a dietary drink, made without sugar, and artificially sweetened. Funny Face, unlike Kool Aid, had a unique character for each flavor making it very appealing for advertising and promotions.

On February 2, 1966, According to the New York times Native Americans lodged an official protest against the Pillsbury company stating the Injun Orange character was an offensive stereo-type.
In 1966 Pillsbury wisely changed the names of two of the drink mixes. Chinese Cherry became Choo-Choo Cherry eliminating the hideous Asian stereotype that had been on the shelves and homes for two years.

At the same time Injun Orange was changed to Jolly Olly Orange.
The packaging also now contained the cryptic message
"Artificially sweetened imitation drink mix." Just what is it then?
The repackaging was not the end to Funny Face's problems. Two years later they would be faced with an entire product redesign.
From 1964 to 1968 Funny Face was sweetened with cyclamates.
In 1968 Funny Face was pulled off of the market as cyclamates were banned by the FDA.
In 1969 Funny Face re-emerged sweetened with saccharine. However, the after-taste of saccharine affected sales, and in 1970 the new Funny Face was introduced in which the consumer had to “just add sugar”. Tastes improved as did sales, and in 1972 vitamin C was added.
Larger packs were later available in which the sugar was included.
It was a good run for Pillsbury as the Kool-aid man was alone in his quest to quench the thirst of American children, Funny Face had a character for each flavor. A virtual army of child friendly flavors. Coupled with extensive mail away merchandise it was an all out war against Kool-aid man. In the end one was left standing. Oh Yeah!
It seemed Kool-Aid Man was no match for the maniacal Funny Face characters nor was the plain orange flavor any competition for Jolly Olly Orange. The line ran out of gas in the last '70s, and was eventually sold to Brady Enterprises in 1980. The Kool-Aid Man had won.

The final flavor was added in 1983 … Chocolate. It bore the repulsive name MOO JUICE. And that was the end of Funny Face.
Brady Enterprises are still in business and are the creators of powdered bar mixes, cranberry stuffing mix and dishwashing powder.

Reborn as Bobbleheads.

  1. Just wondering if you've ever actually seen any evidence that CHINESE CHERRY and INJUN ORANGE were replaced due to complaints from the public. This seems logical, but I've never been shown any evidence to support that, and it is possible (though not likely)that the decision to oust the racially insensitive flavors was entirely an internal decision within Pillsbury.

  2. Paul to be quite honest no. If fact I'll change that part of the post. I based that on what I have heard and I too have never seen record of a lawsuit or one letter of dissatisfaction.

  3. Yes, EVERYBODY says that the characters were changed due to complaints, and it certainly makes sense that this is what happened, but I'd feel a bit better about repeating it if I actually saw a copy of a news article or something.

You know what this reminds me of? When I was little--we're talking early 1960s here--Pillsbury came out with a powdered soft drink called "Funny Face" with flavors like Goofy Grape, Loudmouth Lime, and  Chinese Cherry and Injun Orange:eek: !! Really! On the front were very racist drawings of a smiling Chinese "coolie" face and a leering Native American face. I was only a kid but I was very upset.

Apparently someone else was too because in a few months, they were renamed Choo-choo Cherry and Jolly-olly Orange. What were they THINKING?

So people were hurt by the packaging.

  5. I wonder if the writer is Asian? Though only partially "Indian" (and a small part at that), I identified primarily with that part of my heritage, and - though I'm sure others would take offense - I actually embraced INJUN ORANGE. I can see where the buck-toothed CHINESE CHERRY would not have gone over very well in the Asian community, however! (my wife is actually Chinese, and ironically, she & I now treasure our unopened CHINESE CHERRY and INJUN ORANGE packets).

Are you familiar with the similar Shedd's Peanut Butter debacle from around the same time? Much more frightening, I think, though I only have my young memory of what happened, as opposed to anything rock solid. Anyway, here's what I KNOW... Shedd's put out a series of glasses with jungle scenes on them, including a caricature of a jungle native on each glass. Shedd's also put out a series of glasses that was identical to the others, except that - where the one set had natives - the other had apes in the very same poses! (I know this much, because I own both sets of glasses).

What I don't know, but surmise, is that the set with the natives came first, and was soon followed by public anger. Yet, rather than pay for an entirely new design, my guess is that Shedd's decided they could quickly correct the problem by replacing the natives with apes, a decision I would have to imagine only further outraged critics of the 1st set! Unfortunately, I've been unable to find a word about any of this on the web.

Anyway, its off to bed for me!

    Best!

  6. Paul,
I dont recall those glasses but I will look into them. I do remember the Shedd's Peanut Butter Green and White glasses. If I find anything on the jungle glasses I'll post it here. It sounds like a truly horrific set.

  7. Well, I'm surprised Chinese Cherry wasn't Oriental Cherry. Everyone that drank these now drinks White Zinf and Pinot Grigio.

  8. I'd be happy to provide you with digital pics of the Shedd's glasses. The "native" set, which I presume to be the original set, included 6 glasses. Each pictured the native and the Shedd's pixie/elf, plus one of the following animals: Lion, Giraffe, Zebra, Elephant, Camel, Ape.

The other set is identical, except for two things:

    1) Instead of the native, there is an Ape on the glass in the same pose as the native.

    2) Since one of the "Native" glasses already had an Ape on it, I guess they didn't want to end up with a glass that had 2 Apes, so the alternate version of the "Native, Elf & Ape" glass was more fully redesigned... seemingly by a different artist... in a way so as not to have two Apes on the glass. On this version, instead of a "Native", there's a Bear, and this Bear is oddly more "cartoonish" than any of the characters on any of the other glasses, thus my belief that a different artist was employed (and also, thus my belief that this set came later). Additionally, perhaps in an effort to make the style of artwork on this glass consistent with the cartoonish look of the Bear, the Ape on the other version has here been replaced by a more cartoonish version of an Ape.

  9. Paul I'd love to see them. I have yet to find anything on the redesign of these containers. I was lucky on the Funny-Face front. I was lucky enough to find a headline from the New York Times dated Thursday February 3rd 1966 claiming Native Americans were upset about Injun Orange. They protested the day before. That seemed to be the eye opener for Pillsbury.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Good detective work! How did you find the headline? I had previously tried searching the NY Times online archive for "Chinese Cherry" and "Injun' Orange", but did not come up with any relevant results. I'd love to see what you turned up!

I have to leave for work shortly, but will try to find time to take some shots of my glasses for you sometime over the next couple of day. In the meantime, here's a link to a past eBay auction for 4 of the glasses, for which the seller provided several pics. You will note that the two on the right are alternate versions of one glass (glass #3 is "Native, Elf, Giraffe", while glass #4 is "Ape, Elf, Giraffe"). Also, note that glass #1 is the one in which the bear was substituted for the "Native", though the "Native" version of this glass is not shown. Finally, while I had not taken notice of it until just now, I now see that the Ape on the entire "replacement series" is done in the more cartoonish style of the Bear. You can see this by comparing the original Ape on glass #4 to the "replacement series" Apes on glasses #1 and #2.

  12. Some people are entirely too sensitive. It's time for people to toughen up if "Chinese Cherry" and "Injun Orange" are your idea of racist.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Dear Anonymous,

Its a shame that you felt you needed to hide your identity. You don't. I doubt anybody is going to bite you here. In any case, I wonder if you are basing your comment merely on the names of the characters? If so, then your comment is less than fully informed. Additionally, the original post said that Native Americans found INJUN ORANGE to be a "negative stereo-type", which falls a bit short of "racist". Similarly, my post indicated that I understood where some might find the characters "racially insensitive", which - again - is a step short of "racist". In any case, the charges of stereotyping did not stem from the names of the characters alone. There's also the fact that CHINESE CHERRY was buck-toothed, and both characters not only spoke in broken English with exaggerated accents, but also often had stereotypical sound effects behind them (a Chinese gong; beating Tom Tom's, etc.). Certainly you wouldn't disagree that stereotypes like this are a bit racially insensitive?

  14. Hi,

Just found this post! I remember funny face when it first came out (which gives you a hint as to how old I am) I remember flinching when I saw Injun Orange and Chinese Cherry. I remember that became the nickname of the Chinese kid in elementary school (she cried). Freckle faced Strawberry also became the nickname of any kid who had freckles.

Then I was surprised when they changed the Orange and Cherry flavors - I remember reading in the paper that there was a protest. You would have to go back to the 60's to find it (if not in some book or something) which means you would have a hard time on line finding something that old.

I felt for the Chinese and the Native Americans as I am African American and had to deal with a story and a restaurant called Sambo's

    Thank You

  22. Funny Face was marketed by Pillsbury in 1960s. It was a powdered instant drink mix similar to Kool-Aid, Pillsbury used calcium cyclamate as a sweetener, but due to a subsequent discovery, the sweetener was changed to saccharine, with the option of buying packets with no sweetener.

I have always been bothered by the over reaction and political correctness of "offensive" objects. I collect advertising characters, and once knew Tim Williams, the Stanford "Indian". The team changed their name to the Cardinals, due to pressure from some radical group. Actually, Tim, who was, at that time, the head of the Bureau of Indian Affairs for Califonia, told me that he was proud, and I'm sure mourned the loss, of being the Mascot. He was also chief of the Hurok Tribe at that point. I'm sure that there were some that thought that the caricature of the Stanford Indian was racist and awful. Actually, it was a great caricature of Tim, who cherished it and had a decal of it on his car window.
